Focus on the main idea: Slavery expanded rapidly in the English Colonies during the 1700's, especially in the Southern Colonies.
Questions to think about as you read: 1 What conclusion can you draw about the talents and skills of enslaved people based on the kind of work they did? 2 What valuable crop did enslaved people of West Africa show planters how to raise? 3 What hardships were enslaved Africans on Southern plantations forced to endure? 4 How did Olaudah Equiano feel about equality and independence? 1 They had different talents and skills. 2 They showed planters how to grow rice in the Carolinas. 3 They worked hard all day and sometimes during the night; their families were broken up; they had to struggle to keep their culture alive. 4 He believed they were important rights with which all humans were born. Focus on the main idea: Going to school , attending religious services, and reading for news and entertainment were important parts of everyday life in the colonies.
Questions to think about as reading: 1. Why did colonial children not have much time for games? 2. What conclusion can you draw from the long gap between the dates of the establishment of the first and second colleges? 3 Why did many Jews and Christians who left Europe to come to the colonies have in common? 4 The Great Awakening is part of our national identity. Summarize some of the contributions religious groups made to our nation during this movement. 5 Why was reading such an important form of entertainment in the colonies? 6 How were colonial meals similar to and different from foods we eat today? Answers to questions: 1. After school they had to do chores. 2. Although education was important, many had to work and were unable to attend college. 3 Many were escaping religious persecution in Europe 4 They built churches and colleges. They inspired people to build orphanages and help others. 5 Colonists had limited resources for entertainment and reading was a way they could share stories. 6 We eat fish, meat, vegetables, and desserts.
