Focus on the main idea: Slavery expanded rapidly in the English Colonies during the 1700's, especially in the Southern Colonies.
Questions to think about as you read: 1 What conclusion can you draw about the talents and skills of enslaved people based on the kind of work they did? 2 What valuable crop did enslaved people of West Africa show planters how to raise? 3 What hardships were enslaved Africans on Southern plantations forced to endure? 4 How did Olaudah Equiano feel about equality and independence? 1 They had different talents and skills. 2 They showed planters how to grow rice in the Carolinas. 3 They worked hard all day and sometimes during the night; their families were broken up; they had to struggle to keep their culture alive. 4 He believed they were important rights with which all humans were born. Focus on the main idea: Going to school , attending religious services, and reading for news and entertainment were important parts of everyday life in the colonies.
